Manage the applications update
Microsoft Intune Enterprise App Management permit to discover and deploy applications. It’s also permit to keep up to date from the Enterprise App Catalog. This catalog is a collection of Microsoft and non-Microsoft application. These apps are Win32 apps that are prepared as Win32 apps and hosted by Microsoft.
Some prerequisites must be respected :
- Intune P1 or P2 licence
- Enterprise App Catalog is available for Windows Apps
The benefits
Different following benefits are provided with Enterprise App Management.
When an apps is added on Enterprise App Catalog, the following installation details is prefills automaticcaly by Intune.
- Install and uninstall command
- Time required for install the application
- Option that permit at the user to uninstall the application
- Device restart behavior after the installation of the application
- Return codes for post-installation behavior
- Whether to install the app for system or user
Intune prefills also the detection rules that devices must meet before the installation of the app and the requirements.

- File version
- Registry
- Windows OS architecture required
- Minimum OS required
Auto Update
It’s possible to keep automatically the Enterprise App Catalof apps up to date. When this mode is enabled with a required assignment, Intune detects when a newer version is available in the catalog. The updates is automatically apply for the apps on the targeted devices. So is not needed to create a new app or configure a supersedence relationship for each update.
The Auto-Update help to simplify the app lifecycle management, he remove the manual packaging and supersedence steps. We can also eleminate the long tail of update maintenance and keep devices secure.
Auto-update is applies to Enterprise App Catalog apps only It’s applies at the apps who required assignment is configured. For the Available assignment, we continue to use the existing update workflow.
Add an Enterprise App Catalog App
From the Intune portal, click on Apps / All Apps then on Create.
Select Windows from the Platform drop-down list, then select Enterprise App Catalog app from the App Type drop-down list. Click Select.
Click the Search the Enterprise App Catalog link, then search for the app you want. Click on Next. We need select the desired package type (msi or exe) then click on Next
Select the desired update mode. Automatically update keeps the application up to date automatically. This setting disables certain options, such as installation and uninstallation scripts. Update with supersedence allows you to update via supersedence. This makes it possible to use custom settings, such as script-based installation.
The app has been created. You can edit certain fields and add a logo. Click on Next.
Some options, such as Requirements and Detection rules, are not available. VLC is not imported into Intune, so there is no need to supersede an app. Click Next without making any changes.
Configure the assignments, then click Next. In the example below, the application is deployed to all users. Click on Next then on Add App.
Result
We can retrieve the Properties of the application. Some of this properties can be modify. We can see that there is no command line for install or uninstall. The detection rules are also not present on the properties.
On the Intune portal, we can follow the deployment.
